From Hell
November 2nd, 2001We recently got a chance to see the movie adaptation of Alan Moore’s Victorian tale of Jack the Ripper, From Hell. Comic Book aficionados will certainly rembember Moore’s legendary achievement of the mid-80’s, Watchmen, a veritable staple in the Postmodern comic book genre that has reached well-deserved cult status.
As for the movie, I don’t have much to say. Depp is successfully persuasive as the visionary sleuth who ultimately unmasks the man behind the massacre. Graham is convincing as the whore. While the performances aren’t necessarily a disappointment, the movie itself doesn’t do too much to surprise an audience that’s easily lured in by sex and violence either. I saw the ending quick and from about five states away. I almost got another driver’s license there, I thought I’d be there so long.
Ultimately, though, it pulled off a successful story of suspense and I wasn’t left with nearly the bad taste that Blow left in my mouth. If you’ve got nothing else to do, From Hell gets a decent approval rating from us.
