As Bees in Honey Drown
November 13th, 2001Continuing with Liz’s extended tour of the Arts, also know as graduate school, we ended up at the University of Maryland this past Saturday for a production of As Bee in Honey Drown, a Faustus-like tale of underhanded deception in a world of contemporary art and culture.
Of course, the production itself, which held my interest thoroughly captive, had to be upstaged by the televised football action being played next door. It seemed, unbeknownst to us, that the Terrapin Stadium is situated directly beside the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, a multi-million dollar technical achievement in sound proofing.
The hefty 37 to 20 lead against Clemson actually worked against us as people started pouring out of the stadium just as our play was also letting out. We managed to waddle through the mass of stale beer and Styrofoam paraphernalia, though, and made our way through campus and out of the parking lot unaffected by the cheering mob.
Here’s to more survival in modern culture.
