Devil’s Advocate
April 25th, 2002It’s true. When I’m not practicing my usual devil worship, I like to read comic books—or rather I should say I’ve been picking up that favorite past time as of late. Some of this has been due to an idea I’ve been tossing around with a friend, but have had little time to do anything about (oh, the mystery). But a lot of it has to due with the Marvel movie mayhem buzzing about Hollywood.
Case in point. I’ve picked up Kevin Smith’s (a.k.a. Silent Bob) comic book writing debut into the Daredevil series. It’s okay, I guess. Just a little too obsessive about Catholicism and God for me to take on pulp paper. Apparently, he wrote it around the same time as that other piece of crap, Dogma, came out on celluloid. Neither work really struck a nerve with me, and I was raised Catholic, but that’s okay.
After all, he’s humble enough to recognize that his contribution to the Daredevil series (where he sits among a pantheon of writers like Frank Miller and Ann Nocenti) is a “not-so-important” work, as revealed in this recent interview on the set of the new movie. That lucky bastard has a cameo!
The introduction to Kevin’s Guardian Devil story was written by his friend and future star in red tights, Ben Affleck. It is obvious in the sensitively written prose that Ben feels a true connection with the character and story. Hopefully, that may make for a better movie. But we’ll just have to wait and see.
