Evolve

March 19th, 2003

Righteous babe, Ani DiFranco was in Harrisburg tonight for a somewhat somber, yet inspirational, evening of song. Liz and I enjoyed the show, as the surprisingly petite folk singer spun solo through a litany of heartfelt numbers, including a spoken rendition of her poem, Self Evident.

When asked to comment about the war on Iraq point blank by a female fan (comprising the usual 60% of her audience), Ani responded, “Well, I think it’s insanity…”

Well, we all knew that and there wasn’t any point in preaching to the choir but Ani went on to make a point that despite the world’s frustration she tries to make her performances “hopeful.”

So, after closing with Evolve, the lights dimmed, the crowd dispersed into the streets, and Ani most likely got on her bus and moved on.

“I think it’s insanity.” … “Well, we all knew that”

Yep. It sure is insanity that Saddam won’t give up. Do you not do your homework? Look at Gallup Polls (a fairly liberal outlet might I add). I don’t hardly think that you can look at a 2/3 majority of the American people supporting President Bush’s actions and comment that “we all knew” it is insanity. Give me a break and get your head out of the sand; war isn’t something that anybody likes, but the majority of us DO SUPPORT OUR NATION. http://www.gallup.com/

Okay, then, let me clarify. In the context of this post “we” simply means the 1,500 people who attended the concert and spent an hour and a half listening to an artist express her well-known personal views on war and women’s issues. So, yes, “we” were all aware of what her answer was going to be.

But thanks for doing my homework. I really should get my head out of the sand and check the gallup polls before making up my mind on an issue. That’s probably the best thing to do.

Hankyman X is not an Ani fan from what I gather. And the rest of the world’s opinion probably doesn’t carry much weight with him either I would suppose. American’s know best, right?

Hate to break it to you, but Americans (not American’s) don’t always know best and I do not pretend to believe they do; funny that I am in this situation as I don’t agree with a lot of our government’s policies. I will not, however, apologize to anyone who believes we are in the wrong for protecting ourselves. We are emptying the loaded gun, plain and simple. I won’t wait for someone I believe will shoot me to shoot first. If they have the weapons, they have the history and they make the threat (whether passively or actively), I will act first. I respect Mike’s opinion, but wanted to point out to him that the context of his statement (that everyone thought this was insanity) was misleading.

To purport that the whole world is on our side was not the point of my post and it saddens me that we don’t have the support of some major world players that the U.S. has helped (and when I say “help” I mean Americans fought and died for them) and their apparent “amnesia” is appalling to me. I am sure that in retrospect things will be much clearer than they are now. When it comes down to go time though, you always find out who your real friends are and I haven’t heard one good argument from those dissenting parties that will sway my opinion - I only hear the same rehashed misinformation. If more people did their homework and made an intelligent decision for themselves, they might be less inclined to protest OR at least present me with some valid arguments.

PS - I enjoy an intelligent debate with Mike and thought we were having one until it degraded to making fun of screen names; that lends tons of credibility to your statements. ;-) See, that is the great thing about free speech, you can make yourself look like an ass of your own accord. Thanks.

Sorry, I thought this weblog was open to anyone, my bad. Please continue your “intelligent debate” with Mike (although, it seems that you were insulting him and not debating). I guess the mad cowboy disease is spreading.
