Rush to Judgement

October 1st, 2003

You know, I was upset as the next Philadelphia Eagles fan over Donovan McNabb’s lackluster performance during the first two games of the season. Not once in my mind, though, did I ever attribute it to race. That’s something only an idiot neandrathal could delude.

RUSH LIMBAUGH: I don’t think he’s been that good from the get-go. I think what we’ve had here is a little social concern in the NFL. … I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there’s a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve. The defense carried this team.

Rush didn’t attribute McNabb’s performance to his race. He attributed the media’s attention to McNabb to his race.

Well, whatever, I suppose we could split hairs over my semantics. I just feel bad for McNabb who now has to overcome this needless, even slanderous statement. I mean, he didn’t come near to winning the Superbowl, or go to the Pro Bowl, or lead his team to victory more often then not by way of media attention.

Rush is way out of line.

The fact that you say that Rush attributed McNabbís poor performance to his race is what is slanderous. To accuse Rush of racism in regards to his statement is pure absurdity and shows a lack of language comprehension. Granted, Rushís opinion may have been out of line, or it may not have been. Has anyone looked at the recent stats of McNabb? If his stats suck, then part of what Rush said would be true. The other part about the media being racist; which is what Rush really said, could still be debatable. Just because itís debatable doesnít mean heís racist . . . duh.

The entire point of my post was that McNabb’s race was never an issue — for me personally. Apparently, though, at some point it became an issue for Rush or he never would have made the statement. I don’t care if he was connecting the dots to the media. It really doesn’t matter. McNabb is a great athlete who can stand above the pointless criticism.
