Big Fish
I had no expectations walking into the movie Big Fish because knew absolutley nothing about it, except for the fact that it was directed by Tim Burton and had been based on a book of the same name. Although indications of recurring Burton visual themes are definitely there, it almost stands out on a happy foot from the herd. Maybe because for the first time ever, Burton is forced to hone in on actual subject matter—mythology, metephor, and nostalgia—instead of meandering through plotless yet ever-stunning imagery for two hours.
I’ve always been a fan of his artistry. It’s almost impossible to seperate Tim Burton from his Cabinet of Dr. Calagari style. Just as well, this movie solidifies his natural tendency for the comedically absurd. But I wish it hadn’t reminded me so much of Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou meets Forrest Gump meets The Princess Bride meets A River Runs Through It.
I mean, I just hate those dumbed down analogies.
