Odd Duck

February 26th, 2004

John Waters admits that he’s an “odd duck.” And despite my love of all things culture, I can’t say that I have too much of a fondness for any of his films. His interview with Terry Gross, though, was far more entertaining to me than anything he’s put out in the theaters.

The interview illuminated the offbeat director’s surprising thoughts on a diverse array of topics, including:

  • his experience breaking so-called rules of decency
  • why there’s no such thing as a bad movie
  • why some people are always miserable
  • aging and plastic surgery
  • the problem of irony
  • independent films
  • the death penalty
  • public nudity
  • and, of course, gay marriage
