Starsky and Hutch

***

Starsky and HutchStarsky and Hutch is not the most original movie ever to come out come out of Hollywood. Let’s just face a simple fact, though. Tinsletown is dried up at the idea farm and rerunning popular TV shows with an impunity that would probably make B.A. Baracus take notice. All the same, this movie might still be a fun way to waste an afternoon—especially for teenage boys looking to play hooky from school.

I don’t know how accurately the original cop buddies were portrayed. The show went off the air in the early 70′s, just as my interest in TV began its birth. But I can tell you that the comedy duo of Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson probably have a harder time not being funny together. These two can’t help but make comedy sparks happen. And the tongue-in-cheek homosexual tension may be something only they have the male security to pull off.

The fact that Ben seems to be stretching himself thin these days (there were two more of his films advertised in the lobby) doesn’t seem to matter much either. He’s still able to lead the role and be flexibly outrageous. Anyone who appreciated The Ben Stiller Show might just look at this as an extended spoof gone horribly awry, way over budget, and made fittingly absurd, which I can only view as more reasons for its highest recommendation.
