The Hour of Need
Well, since I wrote about the last debate it turns out that the press really has been too lazy to point out the million and one red herrings Dubya has been emitting to the American public in his effort to hide the terrible job he’s done as president. Want to know why health care sucks? Blame trial lawyers. Want to know why you can’t get a Flu vaccine? Blame England. Want to know why we’ve lost jobs. Blame education, er… uh… I mean, those damn liberals!
It seems to me, at least in the morning when I turn on the Today show, that the mainstream American media has not made a serious effort to keep people informed about either candidate. Sadly, this isn’t anything new. But the most important election of my lifetime just happens to be days away with both candidates appearing in a dead heat (despite the fact that one is leaps and bounds more competent to make a bologna sandwich than the other —ooooh, I’ll keep you guessing there).
Instead, we’re feasting on a non-stop Bill O’Reilly-o-gate on every channel. I’ll say this: As much as I dislike that man, whose spin on everything is every bit as repugnant as the cheap merchandise he likes to peddle, I could not care less about his personal life. So he’s being sued for sexual harrasment. Great. Can I please hear something intelligent about Kerry? He only addressed like every foreign and domestic issue ever at the debates. Anybody feel like following up? How about George? Do the sound snippets of his trained monkey audiences on the campaign trail count as intelligent commentary?
Oh, and for the love of God, if Katie Couric is going to continue obsessing over Bill O’Reilly, can she at least get it straight that he’s an “opinion” anchor and not a “news” anchor. If you’re going to distract us, at least get the facts right.
I’m afraid John Stewart may be right. We’re not getting the help from them we so desperately need.
